Heard that he wrote a poem on Poe and would like to read it at the next Boston Literary Society meeting. Tells him that he stabbed himself by accident with a letter opener. Wishes he would participate in the Medford Lincoln Solmnities on February 12th. Tells him how he makes lemonized milk every day.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
